A Simple Laundry System That Keeps Me From Losing My Mind

Laundry is one of those chores that never seems to end, especially with little kids. Out of all of the household tasks, doing laundry is actually one of my favorites, but I still used to feel like I was constantly trying to catch up until I simplified my system.

Is it perfect? Absolutely not.

But it helps our home feel a little more organized and prevents mountains of clothes from showing up all around the house.

My Laundry Basket System

Instead of trying to sort clothes after they’ve already piled up, I keep separate laundry baskets throughout the house.

Here’s what works for our family:

  • One basket in each of my kids bedrooms
  • Three baskets in our main bathroom:
    • My clothes
    • My husband’s clothes
    • Towels

Having everything pre-sorted means I’m not spending extra time separating laundry before I start a load or when I go to put it away.

One Load a Day

Rather than waiting until laundry becomes overwhelming, I try to wash one load every morning, usually before the kids wake up.

Some days life happens, and I miss a day and that’s okay. But having the goal of one load a day keeps the laundry from becoming a mountain.

Folding at a Time That Works

I usually fold laundry after the boys are in bed when the house is quiet or in the middle of the day when they are occupied playing. I used to fold it during nap times, but then I never really felt like I had a break so I made a change.

If it’s the kids’ clothes, I often wait until my toddler is awake because he actually loves helping! We use simple organizational bins in his room, so he knows exactly where everything goes. He proudly puts away his pants, pajamas, socks, underwear, and shorts all by himself. His shirts and sweatshirts we hang up together in his closest. Not only does it help me, but it’s also teaching him responsibility and independence in an age-appropriate way.

Progress Over Perfection

One thing motherhood has taught me is that home systems don’t have to be complicated to be effective.

The best systems are the ones you’ll actually stick with.

This simple laundry routine has helped me spend less time feeling overwhelmed and more time enjoying my family and that has always been the goal. I also need to give credit where credit is due and that is to my mom, we call her Gigi. Gigi is the one who suggested the multiple laundry baskets, so shout out to Gigi.

I’d love to hear from you! Do you have a laundry system that works well for your family? Share it in the comments so we can all learn from one another.

With Gratitude,
Angie
